WHAT IS 4WAY TEST?
4Way Test is the
key guiding principles of Rotary International aimed at getting people assess
their thought and conscience very well before embarking on any action. The 4Way
Test was scripted by Hebert J. Taylor as he set out to save the Club Alluminium
Products Distribution Company from Bankruptcy in the early 1930s and was
adopted by Rotary International in the early 1940s.
The 4Way Test is
a test of the things we think, say, see or do which can be applied profitably
in our relation to others around us; at home, in business environments, in
government offices and even in national and international relations. The 4Way
Test advocates that you ask yourself the four questions in anything you are to
do before taking actions;
1. Is
it the truth?
2. Is
it fair to all concerned?
3. Will
it build goodwill and better friendship?
4. Will
it be beneficial to all concerned?
I think our
society will be a better place if both the leaders and the followers can key
into this. When we follow this principle in all area, then sanity will be
restored in our world.
If Nigeria
constitution can be summarized into 4Way Test, Nigeria will be a better place
to live without bulky constitution. The perception of some narrow-minded
Nigerian about corruption is that only public office holders are the only ones
who engage in corrupt practices by stealing public funds. Corruption
encompasses all our attitudes, actions and inactions that are contrary to
ethical standard and capable of causing pain to others e.g.
·
Clergy man who doesn’t preach the truth.
·
Trader who sells above normal price for quick
gain.
·
Teacher who involves examination malpractices.
·
Students who passes examination fraudulently
NOTE: 4Way Test is not a code, not
a creed, not a religion but rather it is an assessment device, a basisi for
inquiry, a structured analysis or more simply stated a checklist to help one
find the right thing to say or the right thing to do.
HOW TO PREACH THE 4WAY TEST
We
can preach the use of 4way test to all living soul using all our possible means
and mode of communication; we have to enforce the use of the 4Way Test to make
a world a better place to live. Some people have started the campaign on the
use of the test e.g.
v A
Japanese Rotary Club printed the 4Way Test on umbrellas for passengers at
railway stations.
v Rotary
Club Bayswater in Australia sponsored an essay and poster contest among the
town’s 11-14 years old using as its theme “A man’s struggle with his conscience”.
v NASA
Astronaut Buzz Aldrin planted a 4Way Test pin on the moon’s surface.
v Rotary
Club Meerut, India erected a stone pillar next to the highway inscribed with
4Way Test.
v Similar
monuments were built in public parks by Rotary Clubs in Brazil, Japan and the
Philippines.
I want to
implore Nigerian Government to adopt the use of 4Way Test for the betterment of
this nation.
